The way they change color depends on the type of stimulus they are designed to react to. ​Here are the most common types of color-changing technologies used in jackets: ​1. Thermochromic (Heat-Sensitive) Jackets ​These are perhaps the most common type and react to temperature changes. ​The Science: The fabric is treated with thermochromic pigments (often microencapsulated dyes). These pigments contain a chemical system that changes its molecular structure when heated or cooled. ​How it Works: ​When the jacket is below a specific temperature threshold, the pigment has one molecular structure that appears as a certain color (or is colorless). ​When exposed to heat (from your body, a warm object, or the sun), the chemical structure changes, causing the pigment to absorb and reflect light differently, which makes a new color appear. ​Effect: The color change is reversible, so as the jacket cools down, it returns to its original color.

It’s about persistence, proving people wrong, staying up late to fix a design that just won’t work, and showing that you can belong in both the lab and the runway. Soft Interfaces explores how textiles can sense and respond to touch. By embedding conductive liquid metals into stretchable fabrics, we created surfaces that are not only functional but also tactile, adaptive, and visually refined. The year-long research partnership resulted in an interactive lamp with a textile screen that reacts to the gentlest of touch. By stretching the fabric, the cross-section of the liquid metal pathways changes. A subtle shift that the system reads to adjust light temperature or intensity. This intuitive, touch-based control hints at a new generation of human–object relationship. Beyond the lab, Soft Interfaces could shape operating systems for cars, transform home textiles into responsive surfaces, or bring new levels of sensitivity to medical products.
