Whilst the lawn is still recovering and a bit sandy in places this is how I maintain a clean cut on the cylinder mower ( rover 45 ) Feel free to Let me know any tips or tricks of your own you do. - Refacing the bed knife to 5 degrees with the bed knife buddy so you have a nice clean edge to begin with to lap in -Reverse spinning the reel using my drill and a socket adapter (you can get these at Bunnings cheap.) -Apply 120 grit lapping paste along the full length of the reel -Spin the reel slowly in reverse ( drop the drill into low gear for easier control) I usually listen to hear change note of the lapping paste as it’s grinding. Or you can see the metal surfaces gain a uniform colour where they are contacting the paste. - Flush clean with water to remove any lapping paste and ground off material - Dry thoroughly with compressed air or your blower. - Adjust your Reel to bed knife contact with the height adjust screws ( remember Scotty Bonnar 45/ rovers pivot on the back bolt of the housing so you only need to loosen the front bearing housing bolt to adjust.) Check your cut along the length of the reel using paper test strips or blades or grass and adjust either side until you achieve an even cut across the length of the reel. I like to have a very slight touch when I set mine but still spinning freely. to tight it will get hot and Jam or alternatively ruin your fresh edge. You may need to repeat the lapping process if your reel or bed knife is badly worn or out of adjustment. -don’t forget to LUBRICATE! I use Inox MX3 or MX5 * 1 To prevent surface rust. * 2 This will act as a water dispersant after washing! -Lubricate your chains while the side cover is off also. I use Inox MX9 No Chukka - chain lube -Enjoy a fresh clean cut! #backlap #diy #lawnmaintenance #inox #fyp

Backlapping my reel mower! Started to see it wasn't cutting as good as I wanted so decided it was a good time for a backlap. What is back-lapping? Back-lapping is running your reel mower in reverse with abrasive paste to keep the blades sharp between full grinds. Ideally this is done every 10-12 weeks. It helps re-sharpen the reel without needing a full grind at the shop. Quick steps: 1️⃣ Apply back-lapping paste evenly across the reel. 2️⃣ Run the reel in reverse (slow speed) for 3–5 minutes. Let the paste do the work. 3️⃣ Hose off the paste thoroughly. 4️⃣ Dry and spray with WD-40 or a corrosion inhibitor. 5️⃣ Test your cut (paper test works well). If it’s still tearing, not cutting clean, or you’re getting uneven contact - it’s time for a full grind or bedknife replacement. ✅ Keeps your cut clean ✅ Extends blade life ✅ Saves $$$ on servicing 💡Tip: Don’t overdo it.
