What might look simple on the surface is actually a remarkable biological process: a cow’s stomach can hold more than 95 liters of food and fluid, and within just one milliliter of that fluid live over one thousand BILLION microorganisms helping break down plant material. 🤯 This cycle of grazing, rest, and regrowth is biomimicry in action. All that happens is that a layer of organic matter develops on top which provides a perfect seed bed for plants to establish. Even worse though is the impact that it has on the soil, It will compact it. Because the organic matter cannot get to the soil which is essential for healthy soil, the worms and other insects cannot move it and eat it. There are no roots so the soil compacts because there is nothing to support it. Instead have multi layered planting with plants growing at different heights including lower growing plants such as Deadnettle, clover, wild strawberry, forget me nots, self heal, creeping thyme, herb robert, ajuga, plantain, dandelion, speedwell, chickweed. #garden #plants #soil #nature #nature

20 tips that made my compost pile way better 🌱 1. Chop food waste smaller. 2. Mix food scraps with dry browns (cardboard, leaves, woodchip). 3. Aim for roughly 2 parts browns to 1 part greens. 4. Turn the pile occasionally to introduce oxygen. 5. Keep it moist like a wrung-out sponge. 6. Add diversity. The more different materials, the better. 7. Don’t let big clumps of food waste sit together. 8. Cover fresh scraps with browns to prevent flies. 9. Avoid adding huge amounts of one thing at once. 10. Keep some structure in the pile so air can move through it. 11. Add finished compost or soil to introduce microbes. 12. Protect the pile from heavy rain. 13. If it smells, add more browns and mix. 14. If it’s dry and not breaking down, add moisture. 15. Balance soft materials with woody ones. 16. Don’t rush it. Good compost takes time. 17. Let the pile heat up and cool down naturally. 18. Avoid compacting the pile. 19. Give it space. Bigger piles compost better. 20. When it smells earthy and looks dark and crumbly… it’s ready.
