Well… yes. BUT ALSO NO. Let’s talk about the true cost of living in Spain in 2026 — the sneaky, surprise, “wait what?” expenses no one warns you about 👇 🧀 1. You Will Spend Your Rent on Cheese. You thought you had self-control until you discovered Manchego, goat cheese, truffle cheese, cave cheese, and whatever your local market guy is slicing for free samples. €40/week on cheese is now “just part of who I am.” 🖨️ 2. Bureaucracy Will Break Your Printer Budget. You didn’t know you needed 3 passport photos, 4 photocopies of your bank statement, and a signed picture of your cat to renew your residency. Suddenly you own a printer. Then paper. Then black ink. Then color ink. Then a backup printer. You are now a small office supply store. 🪜 3. IKEA Is Your Religion. “No, I won’t spend €400 on a couch,” you say. Three back spasms later: “Okay, fine. That ‘Cheap Car’ Was a Lie. You found a cute secondhand car. Great! Now meet its BFFs: ✔️ €75 gas tank ✔️ Annual “Impuesto de Circulación” ✔️ Mandatory insurance ✔️ The random fee the mechanic calls “importante pero misterioso” Your car is now your most expensive roommate. 💧 5. You Will Pay Extra to Be Comfortable. Spain is hot. And cold. And humid. And dry. You’ll need a fan, a space heater, blackout curtains, and probably a dehumidifier. I’ve made all the mistakes in Spain so you don’t have to 👀🇪🇸 Here are 5 mistakes to NOT make in Spain: 1️⃣ In the club, my phone got stolen. A month later it popped up in Morocco on Find My iPhone… and there was nothing I could do. Don’t be me. Get a zipper purse!! 2️⃣ You really don’t need tons of cash. Almost everywhere takes card. Just make sure you select EUR at checkout + alert your bank before traveling so you don’t run into issues (learned that one the hard way too) 3️⃣ Download your eSIM before you land. I’ve truthfully tried a million, and honestly @sailyworld is the cheapest + best connection (I’m not just trying to sell you I realized they were the cheapest and that’s why I’m partnering with them). It’s found me €10 flights across the country. Always check before you book a train. 5️⃣ Don’t skip the tax refund when shopping. If you spend €90+ in a store and bring your passport, you can get all the taxes (21%) you paid back at the airport!! It adds up — worth it!!!!

Here are a few tips from someone who came to Spain from the UK. Some of them are just mild culture shocks as an American experiencing you're up for the first time. Before you head to Spain, be sure you know what to expect from the outlets! 🇪🇸🔌 You probably need an adapter. You might not need a converter. Keep reading… Here’s the difference: 🔌 Adapter = changes the shape of the plug Spain uses Type C & F plugs (two round prongs). If your plug has flat prongs (hello, U.S.), you need an adapter so it physically fits into the wall. ⚡ Converter = changes the voltage Spain runs on 220–240V. The U.S. runs on 110–120V. Most modern electronics are dual voltage — phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, chargers.
