🍎 Spelling errors can lead to poor self confidence in writing if not corrected early. Use these strategies below to gently support your child to recognise, correct & move on from spelling errors! ✅ Help your child identify which sound is written incorrectly (point and say the sound if necessary) ✅ Allow your child to self correct the error. TIP; they don’t need to copy the word or watch you do it for them - just point and focus on the correct sound ✅ Once corrected, always repeat the blending of sounds in the word and reread it aloud. Build phonemic awareness! 👂Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual phonemes (sounds). ⭐️Pop-its are one of my top literacy tools! ✏️ Using a pop it to segment sounds in a word helps kids hear every sound. SH goes in one box because it spells one sound. ✅ Only have your child spell words that include letter patterns that have been explicitly taught. For example, don’t expect them to spell the word “quit” if they haven’t learned the QU pattern. Step 2: Drag the magnetic letters into the sound boxes as you say each sound. 👉 SH goes in one box because it spells one sound. Step 3: Segment the sounds again while spelling on the handwriting line. Match each sound to the correct letter(s). ‼️ Important: Only have your child spell words that include letter patterns they’ve been explicitly taught.
