Three main types appear here: ram-headed sphinxes (criosphinxes) symbolizing the god Amun; human-headed sphinxes, representing the king as a living manifestation of divine power; and more rarely falcon-headed forms, associated with Horus. At Karnak, the dominant type is the ram-headed sphinx, most of them dating to the New Kingdom, especially the reigns of Amenhotep III, Tutankhamun, and Horemheb, with later restorations under the Ramesside kings. These sphinxes line the approaches to the Great Hypostyle Hall and processional routes, often sheltering small royal statues between their forelegs, emphasizing the king’s protection under Amun. At Luxor Temple, sphinxes are primarily human-headed, many originally set up under Amenhotep III and later reused or reinscribed by Ramesses II. They marked the sacred space of the temple and its ceremonial entrances. Connecting both temples is the famous Avenue of Sphinxes, a processional road about 2.7 km long, flanked by hundreds of sphinx statues. Its layout developed over centuries, with major phases from the New Kingdom to the Late Period, especially under Nectanebo I (30th Dynasty), who regularized and monumentalized the avenue. The road was used during festivals such as the Opet Festival, when the cult statues of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were carried between Karnak and Luxor, transforming the sphinx-lined avenue into a sacred, ritual landscape.
