I made this as a simple intro to “true” spiders vs. tarantulas for a general audience, but for the nerds who want to know a little more: All spiders are in the scientific order Araneae. True spiders belong to the infraorder “Araneomorphae,” and the other major group of spiders is Mygalomorphae, which includes tarantulas as well as trapdoor spiders and funnel-web spiders (I didn’t really discuss the other two in this vid because 1. More complicated 2. I don’t keep the other two as much/have enough footage to do so). The easiest way to tell apart these two groups are the chelicerae (fangs): True spiders (Araneomorphae) have opposing mouthparts that pinch and usually just two lungs while Mygalomorphs have chelicerae that move up and down and have four lungs! So basically we have: Araneae (all spiders) ⬇️ Mygalomorphs and Araneamorphs ⬇️ ⬇️ Tarantulas, funnel webs, trapdoors ⬇️ Orb weavers, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, widows, many more In the spider-keeping hobby, this distinction is often simplified and focused on care differences rather than evolutionary context. Real or candy? No, your eyes don’t deceive you! This is in fact a real spider! The eight-spotted crab spider is easily one of the strangest animals I’ve ever encountered. Their bright coloration and smooth reflective bodies make them look like they’re made out of plastic or gummy candy until they move. Why are these spiders so brightly colored? In short? We’re not sure! Perhaps these colors scare off predators, or maybe attract prey, but we don’t yet know for certain! These spiders can be found in Southeast Asia and they were among some of my top targets for a trip to southern Thailand. Luckily we came away finding a beautiful specimen and we got to take a close look at one of the most gorgeous arachnids on earth! Not a huntsman 👀 it is a Trachycosmid (Trachycosmidae) This spider can trick people because it is flat and fast, just like many huntsmen. But there are a few visible clues in this photo that point away from huntsman and toward Trachycosmidae. Why it is not a huntsman Huntsmen have laterigrade legs, meaning the legs are rotated so they sit out to the sides in a crab like stance. In this shot the legs are not strongly side splayed. They sit more forward and back, giving a ground runner look rather than a crab walker look. What you can see here that fits Trachycosmidae The body is very low and plate like from above, a common adaptation for slipping under bark and rocks. The front body looks broad and flattened rather than tall and domed. If you zoom in on the face area, the outer front eyes can look slightly domed or raised, which is a known trait used in this group. What we cannot see in this photo The best confirmation feature is underneath at the rear. Trachycosmidae are diagnosed by how the front outer spinnerets are spaced apart. Since the spinnerets are not visible in this dorsal view, consider this a confident likely ID that would be locked in with one extra angle. The final stage of a Harmonicon oiapoqueae male It's crazy to see how the proportions change when these curtain web spiders molt into maturity. The appendage length of males increase tremendously. They can reach 15cm diagonal legspan, which is very big compared other Dipluridae.
