Not much cuter on earth than the WinWin Walk! Spider Monkeys are one species that has more of a tendency to walk upright. Their physiology supports the ambulatory movement better than most smaller non human primates. But, swinging hand of hand, called brachiation, is their most natural movement…. Because they spend 80% or more of their lives in the canopy of the Central and South America rainforests. I often get asked by other monkeys families when Winston started his walk, or if I did anything to cause him to have a predominate upright mobility. The simple answer… Winston is an anomaly in himself. His little bow legged saunter is unique to him. Winston literally started his WinWin walk when he was just a couple of month old… As he has aged he gets harder and harder to capture these moments…. As if he decided not to be captured on film doing his signature move. 😂 The reality is no two monkeys are the same or behave the same. Of all of the spider monkeys that Call SPARTN home… Leana, Hootie, Nikki and, of course, Winston walk upright the most. Each of these thrive in simply being themselves and just enjoying their beautiful life in a big troop here. It’s much like raising our kids… each of my kids afe unique in their own right. They move through the jungle like gravity is just a suggestion… The spider monkey is one of the most acrobatic animals in the rainforest—and honestly, watching one climb feels like watching a parkour expert with no fear of falling. What makes them so unique is that their tail works almost like a fifth hand. Not just for balance… for actual gripping. They can hang their entire body weight from it while reaching for food, swinging between branches, or casually moving through the treetops like they own the place. And the craziest part? The underside of that tail has a bare patch that works kind of like a fingertip for extra grip. Nature really looked at monkeys and said, “What if we gave this one built-in rope equipment?” Honestly, if humans had tails like that, ladders would be obsolete.
