What happens when requests come in faster than your server can handle? This problem is called backpressure. “Let’s start from the basics. Imagine a small water pipe 🚰. If water flows slowly, everything is fine. But if too much water comes at once, the pipe overflows. The same thing happens in backend systems. When users send requests faster than your server, database, or queue can process them, the system gets overloaded. This situation is called backpressure. If we ignore it: * memory fills up * queues grow endlessly * servers crash * So how do real systems handle this? They slow things down on purpose. Instead of accepting unlimited requests, the system says: ‘I’m busy — please wait.’ This can be done by: * limiting request rate * rejecting extra requests * buffering only a fixed amount * applying backoff or delays For example: If a queue is full, the producer stops sending more messages until the consumer catches up. So in simple words: backpressure is the system protecting itself by controlling the flow of data.
