There are many ways of knitting an SSK (slip slip knit), but these are the simplest and most efficient, in my opinion. Do you use either of these methods, or something different entirely? 🤍 Method 1️⃣: 1. Slip 1 stitch as if to knit 2. Slip 1 stitch as if to PURL 3. Insert the left needle into the front legs of the 2 slipped stitches and knit the 2 stitches together 🩶 Method 2️⃣: 1. Slip 1 stitch as if to knit 2. Slip 1 more stitch as if to KNIT 3. Insert the left needle into the front legs of the 2 slipped stitches and knit the 2 stitches together The difference between these 2 methods is how to slip the second stitch. Method 1️⃣ twists the stitch so that it neatly fold behind the front (first) stitch. Method 2️⃣ keeps the stitch flat so the front stitch lies on top of the back stitch. How to work an ssk so that it perfectly mirrors a k2tog: Sl1 knitwise, then sl that st back from RH to LH needle, k2togtbl. Now, as if you were going to knit backwards or left-handed, slip that st as if to knit, essentially making the back loop become the front loop. K2tog and SSK, why do you need to know both? Because they lean in different directions! K2tog leans to the right and SSK leans to the left. So if you want a pretty diagonal line of decreases, you have to use the right one 😘 Save this video to your collection to reference later 💕

Lyn asked me to show how to make an SSK, i.e. a left-leaning decrease. #Knitting 2 stitches together produces a right-leaning decrease, so if you want to have symmetrical decreases, e.g. on either side of an armhole or sleeve cap, you will need to knit 2 together on one side and make an SSK on the other 🧶

SSK is usually worked by slipping two stitches first. But in combination knitting, it can be knitted in one motion. Because the stitch orientation is already set. You know one of my favorite things about teaching knitting classes is that I often learn new tricks myself! Earlier this month while teaching two color thorn stitch a student showed me this no slip SSK decrease and now I’m sharing a simplified version of it with you! To do this you will insert the needle into the first stitch as if to knit, then insert the needle into the second stitch through the back loop, then simply knit them together and let them off the needle. It’s definitely a winner for me and is tidier than my traditional SSK for this pattern. EDIT: this is a simplified no slip SSK that works great for mosaics. It doesn’t require the additional steps of a traditional K2TOG-L/No slip SSK so it’s very fast for this type of two color work. #knitting #knit #handknit #thistlethorncowl #mosaicknitting
