She reformed a whole order… without a platform—just prayer, poverty, and unstoppable courage. Meet St. Colette of Corbie. Colette was born in France in 1381 and became a powerful reformer of the Poor Clares, calling her communities back to a stricter life of poverty and prayer—what later became known as the Colettine Poor Clares. She lived during a messy time in the Church, but instead of complaining, she re-built holiness from the inside—reforming multiple monasteries with courage and deep trust in God. She died in 1447, and the Church later honored her: beatified in 1740 and canonized in 1807 (by Pope Pius VII). Her liturgical feast is March 6, but the Franciscan family celebrates her on February 7. St. Colette teaches us: real renewal doesn’t start with noise—it starts with holiness. Sr Clare’s story didn’t end there. She didn’t enter the convent and suddenly become a saint. She battled for years to give up her old ways - her selfish habits and her desire to be the centre of attention. But over time, God changed her. He changed her because she let Him in, because she kept pursuing Him even when she felt like she was so unworthy of His love. Even through spiritual dark nights, she persevered and continually gave Jesus her “yes”. Until the old Clare was transformed. She went from trying to find ways to get out of her responsibilities when she first joined the Servant Sisters to dying to her own desires to put God’s first. And yet, she didn’t stop being the person she was. Instead, God used her talents to bring people to Him. He used her wonderful ability to make people laugh and her entertainment skills to draw people to Him, all the while purifying her so that she didn’t want to be the centre of attention and used her talents only for love of God, never for her own benefit and glory. An hour after the conversion experience that led Clare to feel an inexplicable call to religious life, her desire for worldly fame was battling with her call to holiness. It was not enough to be a nun, she declared that she would be a famous nun! Proving that God takes care of our dreams - if not in the way we expect - Clare got her wish. She became a famous nun after all - but only after her untimely death. In 2016, at the age of 33 - the age of Jesus when He died on the cross - Clare and several girls were tragically killed in an earthquake in Ecuador. Since then, Clare has indeed become a famous nun: famous for her relatability and humour, yes, but famous too for her holiness. Today, March 6, we celebrate the feast of St. Colette. Saint Colette was born in 1381 in France as a miracle baby to parents who were in their sixties! Her parents prayed diligently to St. Nicholas for a miracle pregnancy ,and so they named her Nicollette, which got shortened to Colette. This is the first reason why she is a patron saint to couples wanting to conceive! She was known as a sweet, hard-working, quiet child. Her parents died when she was a teenager, and she gave her inheritance to the poor and joined to an order of sisters (nuns) When she was 21,she locked herself in a cell to spend her life in penance and prayer- but in 1406 ,she had a dream that she should reform the order of the Poor Clares. After four years as an anchoress, she left her cell( a tiny cell that had only one small window that looked into a church) and joined the Poor Clares, where she re-introduced the primitive Rule of St. Clare, with a particular emphasis on poverty. St. Colette went on to found 17 convents and a reform branch of the Order known as the Colettines. Miraculous healings were attributed to St. Colette, including the healing of a woman in labor and the recovery of a baby who was stillborn. She is considered a patron saint of childbirth, expectant mother’s, and sick children.
