Staircase runners have made a huge comeback in the last 10 years and seem to be on the wish lists of most home owners. But why don’t we talk about the negatives… ~ the dust! I’m no cleaning goddess but the dust on the stair tread sides is relentless. EVERY SINGLE DAY ~ the cracked paint on the stair treads! Staircases have a lot of movement in them which often results in paint cracking along the joints of the wood (if anyone has found a solution to this please let me know 😙) ~ they can make the stairs look very narrow and emphasize an already narrow part of the house ~ this one leads onto the wrong size runner- if the spaces are too wide at the size of the runner plus a lovely thick binding tape you are left with a narrow piece of carpet. ~ I’d say as a rule don’t go for a space either side of your runner more than 8cm, unless you have a really wide staircase. But YES they can look fabulous and I have used a part runner in our new home 🫢 Totally obsessed with this red contrast trim. However the main run is full carpet… still looks fab and feels lux. ~another idea I’ve seen and @vogue_flooring_installations did a great one this week was a full stair carpet, no spaces, but with a cotton tape trim. So you still get the lovely contrast but non of the negs! I’d love to know your thoughts on this one too…

staircase runner install *on a budget* 💁🏼‍♀️ I found that custom length stair runners were thousands of dollars, so I ordered 3 affordable 2’6” x 8’ wool runners for under $400 and fit them together for a seamless look! *Stair runner length calculation below* RISER HEIGHT + TREAD DEPTH x TOTAL NUMBER OF STEPS = RUNNER LENGTH….then add on a foot to allow for wiggle room or mistakes. Use carpet tape to help hold your runner in place as you move it into the perfect position, then fasten it with a narrow crown stapler. Runner regrets… ✌🏼 As soon as we saw the house I knew what I wanted for the stairs.. neutral tones, white stairs and a runner. I have ZERO regrets on doing this, BUT! What no one tells you… THE DUST.. 🤭 No lie, I hoover daily.
