This Cat Knows Your End . . . . Oscar was a therapy cat at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. In 2007, geriatrician Dr. David Dosa wrote about Oscar’s strange gift in the New England Journal of Medicine. Staff noticed that Oscar would sometimes visit residents whose health was fading. He’d curl up beside them and stay until their final moments, leaving shortly after. At first, it seemed like a coincidence, but it kept happening. Dozens of times. Some believe Oscar could sense subtle chemical or biological changes in the body. Others thought it was something deeper, a quiet intuition no human could explain.

Oscar the Cat was adopted by the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. He was adopted to be a therapy cat only for the people working there to realize that he didn’t spend much time with any of the residents and kept mostly to his self. But, one day he showed great interest in one resident specifically and showed great affection towards them. That resident soon died a few days later. The workers realized that Oscar only spent time with certain resident when he somehow knew they were in their last moments. One time, the workers tried to get him to spend time with a senior who they believed were going to die soon only for him to spend time with a seemly healthy senior. That seemly healthy senior soon died a few days later. Over the course of his life, Oscar correctly predicted over 100 people’s deaths and comforted them in their last moments. He died on February 22nd, 2022 at the age of 17.

At the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, there lived a cat unlike any other: Oscar, the quiet guardian of final goodbyes. He was not the friendliest of the six therapy cats who roamed the halls. Reserved and watchful, Oscar preferred solitude. Yet, when the stillness of twilight settled over a patient’s room, he would appear as if summoned by something unseen. With delicate steps, he would curl beside those whose journeys were nearing their end and stay until their last breath. The staff first noticed his extraordinary gift in 2005. It was as though Oscar could sense the soft veil between life and death. Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician at Brown University, began documenting his visits, eventually recording over fifty such moments of quiet companionship. His observations found their way into the New England Journal of Medicine, and later into his book Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. Some said Oscar detected chemical changes while others believed he simply understood what humans could not. Whatever the reason, his presence offered solace and comfort to the dying. Oscar passed away on February 22, 2022, at seventeen years old. But his legacy remains. It's a reminder that empathy can take many forms, and that even the smallest life can hold the deepest compassion.

How do you get a 1500 lb steer out of a chicken coop? Well it was actually easier than I thought it was going to be :-) Daryl is my sweet Brangus steer.. which is a cross between a Brahma and an angus. He was one day old. His mommy did not make it through delivery and so he came to live with me on my farm. The first few days were touch and Go but we finally managed to get them on a bottle and get them healthy and now he's like my 1500 lb chocolate lab :-). . . . . #cow #steere #bull #naughtycow #funnyanimals #farmlife #farmtour #farmlifebestlife #Katytx

Boarding Diaries📹 Boarding student, Jack Lee Steere, interviewed staff and fellow Boarding students about their favourite aspects of Boarding life at Aquinas. Here are their insights!

Oscar is a rescue cat who was adopted by the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Oscar lives on the third floor, an advanced stage dementia unit that allows pet therapy. Like other conscientious staff, he makes rounds of the patients each day, sniffing each one and sometimes choosing to curl up with certain ones. The patients he stayed with would often die within a few hours. Oscar would offer comfort and attention to the dying patient and family members who were in attendance. Once the patient died and he was no longer needed, he would leave the room. Although nursing home staff say that Oscar is not friendly to most people, his mission in life seems to be to give comfort to the dying.
