My friend Neily @countingwithkids just put a post up about how important STEM learning is and it reminded me to bring out the craft sticks! These three activities are easy “prompts” to leave out for your kids before breakfast! Studies show that hands-on, screen-free learning is crucial for a child’s development. Back to School STEM 🙌🏼🚀 ☝🏼This is the perfect activity to help your students get to know each other and practise collaboration in a way that is easy (minimal prep) and fun! 🌋The objective is to get as many teddies (or counters, lego pieces, figurines, gum nuts - use whatever!) off the ground/table as possible using cups, icypole sticks and card. ADD TO THE CHALLENGE 👇🏼👇🏼 ⏳ Give students only 5 mins ➖ Limit materials (encourages creativity) 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼Change group size 📏 Add a height of tower goal 🙊 Add talking restrictions eg. No talking, one person talks and other can touch materials etc. ✨Include a collaboration goal/success criteria eg. ‘To listen to the ideas of others’ 🗣️Afterwards, discuss what collaboration looks, feels and sounds like. Ask students to give examples they noticed during the challenge. But the bottle was empty!?! ⤵ Yes, but no… the only thing inside was air! And when we placed it in hot and cold water to see what would happen, that air reacted differently to the different temperatures. When the bottle goes into hot water, the heat makes the air molecules inside move faster and spread out (called thermal expansion) and it blows up the ghost balloon! 👻 When it’s moved to cold water, the air slows down and takes up less space (thermal contraction) which makes the balloon deflate. 🌡️ The same thing happens in our weather! On hot days, warm air expands and rises. On cold days, cool air contracts and sinks. This tiny experiment is a fun way to see how temperature affects air movement — just like in the atmosphere!
