Happy National STEM Day! My students had an absolute BLAST building their pinball machines. The prep was so quick and easy, and they were entertained, problem solving, engineering, and collaborating for an hour and a half. They had so much fun that we are extending the activity over to next week! This specific activity can be used with grades 4-6, and there are so many different ways you can bring different elements of math into it. The students were timed on how long they could keep the marble in play before it either got stuck somewhere or fell out. Next week, we will be incorporating some basic statistics using their data! Giving STEM experiences in early childhood is all about the thinking process and hands-on exploration the children engage in. 🌿 In this activity, the children: • Experimented by adding and removing items (science) • Observed cause and effect (physics) • Compared weights and balance (math) • Tested and adjusted their ideas (engineering thinking) If you try this activity, feel free to use all kinds of items to explore. Back to School STEM 🙌🏼🚀 ☝🏼This is the perfect activity to help your students get to know each other and practise collaboration in a way that is easy (minimal prep) and fun! 🌋The objective is to get as many teddies (or counters, lego pieces, figurines, gum nuts - use whatever!) off the ground/table as possible using cups, icypole sticks and card. ADD TO THE CHALLENGE 👇🏼👇🏼 ⏳ Give students only 5 mins ➖ Limit materials (encourages creativity) 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼Change group size 📏 Add a height of tower goal 🙊 Add talking restrictions eg. No talking, one person talks and other can touch materials etc. ✨Include a collaboration goal/success criteria eg. ‘To listen to the ideas of others’ 🗣️Afterwards, discuss what collaboration looks, feels and sounds like. Ask students to give examples they noticed during the challenge.
