What is routed access, and should you be using it in your next network design? Routed access is a specific design model. When you use it right, it makes your network simpler, faster, and easier to scale. Traditionally, campus networks follow the 3 tier model: Access → Distribution → Core. Here, all the routing happens at the distribution layer. But in a routed access design, every access switch acts like a router. Each access switch has a Layer 3 interface pointing upstream to the rest of the network Instead of stretching VLANs across the entire campus, traffic gets routed hop by hop. Why would you use this? - It scales better (no massive Layer 2 domains) - Routing protocols converge faster than spanning tree - More boundaries makes troubleshooting cleaner When not to use it: • Small networks - it can be overkill • Legacy gear - not all switches handle full routing well • Centralized policies -sometimes you want the control at distribution. Happy National STEM Day! My students had an absolute BLAST building their pinball machines. The prep was so quick and easy, and they were entertained, problem solving, engineering, and collaborating for an hour and a half. They had so much fun that we are extending the activity over to next week! This specific activity can be used with grades 4-6, and there are so many different ways you can bring different elements of math into it. The students were timed on how long they could keep the marble in play before it either got stuck somewhere or fell out. Next week, we will be incorporating some basic statistics using their data! Stem Challenge ✨ Hey Teachers, this classic is one not to miss & perfect for the start of the school year. Don’t worry, you have everything already in your cupboards with this no prep stem activity. ✔️construction paper ✔️ scissors ✔️ tape or glue sticks Ready for a friendly team competition? See who can build the longest chain! The rules; only 1 piece of paper per team, 1 scissor per group, 1 roll of tape & a 20 minute timer to add a fun element of pressure. This was a perfect team building competition that let the students work together, problem solve & think outside of the box. This activity also allows for a great debrief on what worked & what didn’t work. For example, my losing team actually had a really great strategy (small chains so they could get more out of their paper, but they soon realized the small chains took too long and required more work).
