Yes performing “Roundabout” Live at the Rainbow Theatre in London UK⁣ in December of ’72 ⁣⁣ In a nutshell, this song was the band’s breakthrough hit and it came at a time when they weren’t looking for a hit. When released as a single, the song climbed to #13 on the US Hot 100. From a musical standpoint, Steve Howe recalled that the song was originally “a guitar instrumental suite” and had a basic outline worked out when he first developed it. “All the ingredients are there—all that’s missing is the song. “Roundabout” was a bit like that; there was a structure, a melody, and a few lines.” ⁣ ⁣ Originally, the song comprised of Steve playing the guitar parts on a 1953 Martin 00-18, however, he wanted a more dramatic opening and this promoted Rick Wakeman to play a note on the piano that was recorded and played backward, creating an effect that Howe described “as if it’s rushing towards you”. What he did was play the lowest E note on his grand piano with the E an octave higher which gave it “a fatter feel”. Bassist, Chris Squire played his bass guitar parts with an overdub that was one octave higher using Howe’s Gibson ES-150 electric guitar and mixed with his bass track. ⁣ ⁣ In an effort to compliment Squire’s playing, Wakeman played arpeggios on his Hammond C3 organ on his right hand while playing Squire’s bass parts with his left. Yours Is No Disgrace was already one of the heaviest and most complex songs in early progressive rock, but live in 1971 it became something completely different. At the centre of it all was Steve Howe. Unlike most rock guitarists of the era, Howe did not play like a blues player turned up louder. He mixed jazz, classical, country and hard rock together, which is why his solos always sounded so unpredictable. On “Yours Is No Disgrace,” he jumps between clean melodic phrases, fast runs, strange chord voicings and huge bends without ever losing the flow of the song. It feels technical, but never cold. The song originally appeared on The Yes Album in 1971 and became one of the tracks that defined the classic Yes sound alongside “Starship Trooper” and “I’ve Seen All Good People.” At over nine minutes long, it gave every member of the band room to stretch out, especially Howe. Live, songs like this are why Yes became such a huge force in progressive rock. Jon Anderson brought the high, almost spiritual vocals, Chris Squire held everything together with those aggressive bass lines, and Howe sounded like he was playing three different genres at once. Happy Birthday Stephen James Howe (born 8 April 1947) is an English musician, best known as the guitarist and backing vocalist in the progressive rock band Yes across three stints since 1970. Born in Holloway, North London, Howe developed an interest in the guitar and began to learn the instrument himself at age 12. He embarked on a music career in 1964, first playing in several London-based blues, covers, and psychedelic rock bands for six years, including the Syndicats, Tomorrow, and Bodast. Howe achieved further success in the 1980s and beyond as a member of the rock bands Asia, GTR, and Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe. He has also had a prolific solo career, releasing 20 solo albums that achieved varied levels of success, and collaborating with artists such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Martin Taylor, and Queen. He continues to perform with Yes, his jazz group known as the Steve Howe Trio, and as a solo act. In April 2017, Howe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes. In 1981, Howe teamed with Downes, singer and bassist John Wetton, and drummer Carl Palmer to form the supergroup Asia.[36] Their debut album, Asia (1982), was the highest selling album of 1982 in the US, with 4 million copies sold there.
