Calgary Street Photography Ep. 2 It’s easy to get excited about new places. Traveling somewhere different, seeing things for the first time, being in a space you haven’t experienced before—it naturally sparks creativity. But when you’re surrounded by the same buildings, streets, and light day after day, it can be hard to feel inspired. That sense of novelty just isn’t there, and for a lot of us, novelty is what fuels the creative spark. But the truth is, creativity isn’t just about new places, it’s something you have to practice. It’s like a muscle, and the more you use it, the stronger it gets. And sometimes the best place to stretch that muscle is in your own backyard. You just have to be willing to see things a little differently. This week I took my Sony A7IV and 24-70mm lens downtown for a few hours. I didn’t have a shot list or a plan, just the goal of getting out and seeing what I could find. The 24-70mm is a solid, versatile lens. It lets me go wide when I want to capture the whole scene or punch in when something small grabs my attention. It’s reliable and flexible, especially when I don’t know what’s going to catch my eye. At first, it was tough. I walked past spots I’ve photographed plenty of times. The murals, the glass towers, the bike racks I’ve seen a hundred times. I kept thinking, “There’s nothing new here.” But I slowed down, shifted how I was looking at things, waited a little longer at corners I normally walk right past, and paid attention to how the light was landing instead of just looking for “subjects.” That’s when things started to open up. It wasn’t that the city had changed—it was just that I finally took the time to look closer. So if you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, maybe don’t wait for the next trip or a new location. Grab your camera and revisit somewhere you already know. Are you trying this photo stack idea? 📸 This one is a fun one, simply take two photos. One at a low shutter speed, capture the motion blur as if you were to do a panning shot.
