BULLETPROOF KNEES: PART 1 Are your #knees aching during your day to day? While #walking? #Running? When you get up from sitting? #Recovering from a #knee injury? Or maybe you have no knee problems but want to increase your #performance? If yes to any of the above then try these #movements! 1. Backwards #Treadmill #Walk Make sure the treadmill is going at a slow pace. You can lean your back towards the treadmill with hands on the handrails for #safety. You won’t be in a full #squat but you do want to have a slight bend on the knees with an engaged #core, shoulders back and head up. As your walking backwards take small steps emphasize on rolling from toe to heel and keeping your #hips engaged so your knees don’t cave in. Make sure to focus on your #hamstring and #glutes since they should be doing majoring of the work not your quads. Once it becomes easy you can let go of the handrails and/or increase the incline. This movement has many #benefits but specifically to the knee; it’s gentle on them, helps #strengthen the muscles around the knee and #joint #function, targets the hamstring and #glutes and helps with #gait #mechanics which all help protect your knees. 2. Spanish Squats Another movement that’s gentle on the knee and helps strengthen the muscles around the knee and targets the quads, especially the inner quad, which plays a huge role in #stabilizing your knee. This also helps track the knee to ensure it’s not misaligned. It’s also great for joint stability since it also activates the hip flexors, glutes and #calves which helps create a stable base around the knee. When performing the movement, the band is going to want to push your knees inside so push against the band and use those hips to keep those knees out. Make sure you’re hinging back keeping a tall back. To elevated slow down your tempo with a three second eccentric, hold for three seconds then a three second concentric. 3. Single Leg Sit to Stand Isolating each leg is key for injury prevention and overall strength. It helps highlight and correct any imbalances. This is a key functional movement and motor control that you should be able to do before squatting with a ton of weight.
