Paolo Antonio Testore Pear-Shaped Model Bass Violin Made by Barrie Kolstein within the Kolstein Shop, Baldwin, New York circa 2023. The Bass is a 3/4 size, flat back model Bass Violin. The top table is a two piece plate of slab cut fir. The back table is a two piece plate of Willow, cut on the slab. The ribs are of matching character willow to that of the back table. The scroll and neck are both original of slightly figured maple. The gears are individual brass Baker style tuners. The varnish is a deep brownish amber color quite antiqued in nature. The Bass is setup with Kolstein Low-C Extension. Even more warming up 🤩 it's great to have the hall, where you'll play soon a concert for a few moments alone, just for yourself ☺️ Although this beautiful old bass is my companion for almost 30 years, I will perform on it tomorrow for the first time as soloist with an orchestra. I use normaly my bass made 2000 by @high.derek which has an enormous sonic presence and lovely sound color. Derek High has restored this old bass several years ago (it was a massive restauration). The bass is older than 240 years and it had numerous not-so-well glued cracks on the front, so the shape of the arching wasn't anymore as it should be. Since Derek High restored the arching to 100% as it once was (by opening and re-doing perfectly crack by crack in the cast form) the instrument regained its full sound potential again.
