Link is in bio or just Google “Mike Gorman Patreon” and you’ll find it easily. As you can see, the chords on the animated score are pretty basic compared to some of the finer detail that I’m playing.
Dig into the PDF score for a deeper look at what’s going on within the harmony.
It may be useful to have both side by side to contrast and compare the practical use case of each substitution or embellishment on the PDF score as it occurs. As with a lot of freely played passages, the question of how to write it out timewise is a difficult one.
I could interpret it on the score according to how each phrase should theoretically fit into the basic 4/4 framework of the song, but then you do get certain passages racing past and others moving with indeterminate slowness.

I started my jazz journey in late 2020, two years after completing my degree in classical piano. It wasn't until 2023 that I learned my first jazz standard the proper way. I hired a teacher and he basically showed me that I was doing everything wrong, and that I needed to learn wayyyy more standards than the 3 I learned in 3 years. And so I did. In the next 6 months I had learned at least 30 standards with appropriate spread voicings. It finally clicked - the jazzy chord progressions I longed for.. they were right there in the standards the whole time! And so I continued learning as many standards as I could, and the harmony became more and more familiar. The voicings started becoming muscle memory. That's how I built the skills to reharmonize using jazz harmony. That's what you're seeing and hearing here. I do realize I rushed to squeeze the analysis into a 3-minute video, hah. But everything in this video is classic jazz harmony. If you're already able to play some tunes in time.. then you're ready to learn the exact steps that got me to where I am in just the last few years. You don't need to be playing anything complex.. if it's in time with a metronome or backing track, then you're so much further ahead than you think.
