🔴 Student Voice | Education Debate A student speaker reflected on the purpose of education, quoting, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow and learn as if you were to live forever.” She questioned rote learning practices and argued that education should focus on understanding, growth and character building, not just marks. The remarks have sparked discussion on the state of India’s education system. #StudentVoice #EducationReform #IndianEducation #RoteLearning #YouthDebate

It’s giving: “Graph the quadratic” but also “Please stop trying to throw a marker into the ceiling tile.” It’s giving: “Let’s factor this trinomial” but also “Yes, I do notice when you’re on your phone under the desk.” It’s giving: ✨ math teacher meets full-time performer ✨ Because if you’re not at least a little entertaining while teaching math, half the room mentally checks out before the warm-up is over. But don’t stress—you don’t need a stage presence. You just need to humanize the content. Here are 3 easy ways to make your math class more engaging without sacrificing rigor (or your sanity): 1️⃣ Add a dash of humor. Even a well-timed sarcasm or math pun loosens the mood. Try: “This test is multiple choice. So is your future. Choose wisely.” 2️⃣ Use movement and voice intentionally. Change your tone. Walk around. Whisper a step, then dramatically announce the answer. They’ll perk up whether they want to or not. 3️⃣ Lean into the chaos—strategically. Use group games, math talks, or whiteboard relays. Keep it structured, but leave room for student voice and friendly competition. They’ll think they’re just having fun… and then bam—they accidentally learn something. Because let’s be real—you’re already putting on a show every day. Might as well make it one they remember. 💬 What’s your go-to “teaching in chaos” strategy that keeps students locked in? Drop it below—let’s crowdsource some teacher magic. 📌 Follow for more low-prep, high-impact math strategies that don’t require a degree in drama.

While I wholeheartedly agree that student voice is essential, we must never lose sight of our responsibility as teachers to maintain authority. It feels like we’ve strayed too far in allowing students to evade consequences out of fear of upsetting them or their parents. We need to remain firm and prioritise the safety of all students in our practice. When we permit poor behaviour to go unchecked, we risk creating a hostile and unsafe environment for everyone involved. #instagood #foryou #fyp #instadaily #teachersfollowteachers

A committed student leader, Katie Lim has contributed extensively to both her school, Brentwood Secondary College (@brentwood.sec), and community activities throughout her VCE years. 🌏 Katie’s passion for the environment led her to create the Schools in Monash Sustainability Committee, a pioneering proposal connecting local secondary schools to promote sustainability, supported by Monash Tech School (@monashtechschool), Monash City Council (@monashcouncil), and external experts. ⚛️ Katie played a central role in organising Brentwood Secondary College’s participation in National Science Week, as well as providing academic support to fellow students as a mentor in the school’s English Learning Hub. 🎤 In addition to environmental advocacy and academic mentoring, Katie’s contributions span student voice and cultural engagement. At @AlhambraESD, student voice and choice matters! Middle Schoolers at AlhambraTraditional voted on two homemade recipes to help us decide which one to feature on next year’s menu: 1) Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup) or 2) Sopa de Albóndigas (Meatball Soup). Team 1 and Team 2 from our Menu Development Team threw down and cooked up samples of each recipe. Then our team passed out samples and asked students to vote on which recipe would be crowned the “Recipe of the Year” by voting “yes” or “no” on both recipes. The recipe that had 1,203 “yes” votes and a 94% student approval rating was... Sopa de Fideo (Noodle Soup)! Huge shoutout to the Menu Development Team as a whole for working very hard to share homemade recipes that were from the heart. And to all AESD students, be on the look out for HOMEMADE Sopa de Fideo on next year’s menu! . . . . . . #AESDChildNutrition #EducateServeCelebrate #AlhambraElementarySchoolDistrict #ChildNutrition #Fideo

Recent research examined the challenges students face during recess and offered practical strategies to improve the experience. Researchers found that while recess holds great potential for supporting children’s development, it often falls short due to several common problems. Common Problems Identified: • Lack of adult engagement – Staff focus on order rather than encouraging inclusive play. • Inadequate equipment and space – Limited or poorly maintained materials restrict activity. • Social exclusion and conflict – Bullying and exclusion are common, especially for marginalized students. • Overemphasis on competitive games – Traditional sports dominate, discouraging others from joining. • Limited student voice – Children have little say in how recess is planned or structured. To address these challenges, the researchers proposed a set of targeted solutions designed to make recess more inclusive, engaging, and developmentally supportive. Recommended Solutions: • Recess training for staff – Equip adults to facilitate, not just supervise. • Intentional playground design – Create diverse, accessible spaces for all kinds of play. • Structured play and student leadership – Offer guided activities and leadership opportunities. • Social-emotional learning (SEL) integration – Help students build emotional and relational skills. • Include student voice in planning – Let kids help shape their recess experience. Recess should be treated as a vital part of the school day—supporting students’ physical, social, and emotional well-being, not just offering a break from academics. Citation: Massey, W.
