Welcome to knitting 101: complete beginner For the chunky hat project you will learn: • how to cast on • knit & purl stitches • 1x1 ribbing • stockinette • decreasing stitches • weaving in ends • how to knit in the round • how to use a magic loop What you will need: • one ball of chunky weight yarn (check the label which should tell you which needle size it recommends, choose one that says US 10-11 or 6mm-8mm). As this is your first project you don’t need to invest in “good” yarn. Choose one that suits your budget and preferences. • one pair of US 11 or 8mm needles (I use Chiaogoo interchangeable needles but you can buy one pair with a long or short cord) if you choose a long cord you will need to use the magic loop method which will be explained in a video. • check second hand craft stores, thrift shops, buy nothing groups etc as chunky needles and yarn are often available there! If you’re in Denver check out @recreativedenver • a darning needle for weaving in ends • a stitch marker (you can make this out of string if you don’t want to buy one) I personally do not recommend straight needles, I haven’t used mine since I got them. Circular needles are very versatile and can be used for every project now and in the future. #knitwithme #howtoknit #knitting #knitknitknit

If you’re teaching yourself to knit, choosing a sweater for your first project is unrealistic…and it will probably make you want to give up quicker. Do this first: 1) Knit a bunch of short rows in stockinnete. This will make you confident with knitting and purling, and switching back and forth between the two. 2) Try a different stitch. Once you feel confident with stockinette, practicing a different stitch will build your confidence that you can learn new techniques! 3) Try a challenging pattern like ribbing! You don’t have to finish the full project, just learn how to do a technique that you’ll need to know for your first garment (hat, sweater, bag, etc). Your first few attempts will probably have a lot of mistakes and that’s fineee! The more confidence you gain while practicing, the better your first real project is going to be <3 #knitting #beginnerknitter #knitter

I’ll start! Don’t worry about holding yarn in both hands right away! Focus on tension by dropping the strand you’re not using and stick to your usual knitting style. I’ve made plenty of sweaters this way and eventually transitioned to holding one strand in each hand, but there’s no rush to learn a new knitting method just to do stranded colourwork. The key is to stretch out the stitches you’ve just knit before switching colours. This keeps the float at the back loose enough for stretch! 🧶✨ Hope that was helpful! And I hope there will be many more great tips in the comments! Music from #Uppbeat, https://uppbeat.io/t/justin-lee/wanderlust. License code: CNZVVAMAKM9XV5LZ

A simple trick to make knitting easier ⬇️ And to give you a super clean edge every time (I learned this from my Grandma (Omi) back in Germany when I was a kid, but never knew this was an actual technique with a name 😂🙈) 🧶 Try this: Slip the first stitch of every row and purl the last stitch of every row. Why it works: 1️⃣ This method, often called a selvage edge, creates a smooth, clean border—no bumps or gaps to stress over 2️⃣ Purling the last stitch locks in your row, keeping everything neat and tidy 3️⃣ It’s quick to learn, simple to do, and works with any project! Knitting doesn’t have to feel complicated. Little tricks like this can make your projects easier to knit and more enjoyable to finish. Do you have a favorite hack? More tips? Follow @theknittingmamas_ and be sure to grab your Beginner Guide: just comment ‘GUIDE’ below and I will send the link right over. You’ll be knitting by the new year! 🎊 #knittingforbeginners #beginnerknitter #beginnerknitters #beginningtoknit #beginningtoknitagain #startingtoknit #howtostartknitting #knittingmadeeasy #knittingmadesimple #simpleknitting #knittingforbusymoms #learntoknit #learntoknitonline #knittingisforeveryone
