You didn’t. Because those children were taken away. Isolated. Silenced. Abused. Neglected. Now, autistic kids like my son are seen, heard, supported, and loved. They get to play. To thrive. To be part of the world—exactly as they are. Today, we fight for inclusion. We let our kids be kids. It’s all connected. Most of the refugee crises that force people to seek a better life here are a direct result of Western imperialism and destabilization. It’s always about land/resource theft and occupation. All Americans, besides the native indigenous, are immigrants on stolen land that was captured by genocide and colonialism. It’s all connected, pay attention - what we allow to happen abroad, will happen at home too. I grew up in Queens, NYC. I am now in Texas. I have spent the majority of my life, especially after 9/11, having to defend the idea that I deserve to be treated with dignity and America is my home too. I’ve worked in the hospital setting for over 15 years and I get asked “where are you REALLY from?” on a daily basis, even before I wore hijab. The question always insinuating that I can’t possibly be from here. Racism, xenophobia, and disrespect IS workplace violence. Silence IS violence. Healthcare workers are subjected to varying degrees of verbal, physical, and sometimes sexual assault on a daily basis. If you see this happen to your colleague, please say something. Just like we are supposed to protect our patients from dehumanizing treatment, we are supposed to protect each other as well. Having DE&I policies are all lip service if nothing actionable is done when these incidents happen. Oh and in case it wasn’t clear — FUCK ICE, FREE PALESTINE.
