Rotten egg-smelling gas is a very clear sign of one simple thing: sulfur is being fermented in the gut. That rotten egg smell comes from a gas called hydrogen sulfide. Normally when you eat food that contains sulphur (things like eggs, meat, garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables, or collagen) your digestive system should break it down properly and absorb the nutrients. But if digestion isn’t functioning properly, some of that food doesn’t get fully broken down or absorbed. When that happens, it moves further along the gut where bacteria start feeding on it. As those bacteria ferment the sulphur compounds, they produce hydrogen sulfide gas, and that gas smells exactly like rotten eggs. So the smell itself isn’t really the problem, it is just a sign that bacteria are fermenting food that should have been digested earlier. This often happens when things like: • stomach acid are low • small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) • protein isn’t being broken down well • food is sitting too long in the gut • digestion is generally sluggish When we fix digestive function so food is broken down properly, there’s less leftover sulphur for bacteria to ferment, so no more rotten egg smell - and a much happier digestive system!
