25 years ago today, Sum 41 released “Fat Lip” as the lead single from their debut studio album, All Killer No Filler. The song (Fat Lip) tells the story of Sum 41’s vocalist, Deryck Whibley, whose parents wanted him to be like any other normal person. However, Deryck had a different idea; he wanted to do what he loved, rather than becoming a victim of conformity. At one concert, he explained that the song was inspired by the struggles of being a teenager, encouraging everyone to take charge of their own future and not to care about what others think about it. This song became Sum 41’s first hit. They had signed a record deal in 1999 and released an EP titled Half Hour Of Power in 2000. Actually, Fat Lip was the last song made for the album All Killer No Filler. They originally planned to release In Too Deep as the first single, but that plan was canceled because everyone preferred Fat Lip. Fat Lip was very popular in America, but it became even more popular in the United Kingdom, where Sum 41 played to much larger crowds during their first tour there in 2003. The song reached no. 8 in the UK but only no. 66 in the US. Strangely enough, the band wasn’t very popular in Canada, even though it was their home country.
