Sun Studio is a recording studio opened by rock-and-roll pioneer Sam Phillips at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 3, 1950. It was originally called Memphis Recording Service, sharing the same building with the Sun Records label business. Sun Studio is perhaps most famous for its role in the early years of Elvis Presley’s career. Reputedly the first rock and roll single, Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats’ “Rocket 88” was recorded there in 1951 with song composer Ike Turner on keyboards, leading the studio to claim status as the birthplace of rock & roll. Blues and R&B artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Parker, Little Milton, B.B. King, James Cotton, Rufus Thomas, and Rosco Gordon recorded there in the early 1950s. Rock and roll, country, and rockabilly artists, including Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Feathers, Ray Harris, Warren Smith, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis, recorded there throughout the mid-to-late 1950s until the studio outgrew its Union Avenue location. Let’s get back on track of posting our cross country road trip! And what a way to start back up. Memphis, TN. Land of the Blues, the best bbq you can find, and much much more. It’s also where I (Allyson) spent many days as a kid. I was born not far from Memphis and often our school field trips ended up here. It’s also where I went to my first concert (if you see the pyramid shaped Bass Pro Shops at the beginning that USED to be a concert and museum venue). I saw not only my first concert there, but also my first mummy. It was such a different experience, since now I am an adult and got to show where I grew up to my wife. This is only a small portion of our time there and we can not wait to share more of TN. Also, we got to see the Lorraine Motel which was such an emotional, powerful, and surreal moment. And we got to see Sun Studios, the birthplace of rock and roll. We definitely want to go back here. We didn’t have enough to truly explore the museums, but we’re glad we got to experience this city. And it brought back some pretty cool memories.
