When asked what is my favorite vegetable to grow, the answer will vary by the season. Right now the answer is corn! I love the drama that corn brings to the garden. It grows fast and influences the vibe of the garden strongly. Late season as the plants begin to dry, the sounds of the leaves rustling in the breeze hypnotize me. Grow some corn!

Come and harvest my last succession of corn for the summer 🌽 and see if I can convince you to #growyourfood This is a little bitter sweet as it feels symbolic of the summer produce ending (even though I still have a few fruits and veg on the go). Though I’m very much looking forward to all that nutgrass being suppressed by the winter frosts!! This was the third succession of corn, and the smallest of the 3 being only about 30 cobs. The cobs weren’t as big as the first two successions as the brutal heat of summer definitely impacted growth, and we were away when the tassels were in flower so I didn’t get the chance to hand pollinate as I always prefer to do. Pollination was definitely down on this lot. What we did get was still delicious and the mini cobs go to the chickens so they’re happy 🐓 My seeds this year were from @fairbanksseeds and the variety was Invictus F1. I’ll definitely be growing this variety next year. #corn #harvest #growingfood #gardening

What do you do with messed up corn? 🌽 You eat it anyway. This is what happens when corn isn’t planted in a big block. Corn is wind pollinated, so the pollen from the tassels needs to fall onto the silks of nearby plants. When they’re too spread out, some kernels never get pollinated… and you end up with these funny looking cobs. Not exactly supermarket perfect. But here’s the thing… it still tastes incredible. Straight from the garden to the BBQ with a bit of colour on it and suddenly no one cares what it looks like. Sweet, fresh and honestly some of the best corn we’ve had. Garden lesson of the day Plant corn in blocks, not rows. But also… don’t waste the weird ones.
