-38°c ready! 🥶 But Who are down suits for??? The most common use case has to be High-altitude mountaineering (like Climbs above 7,000–8,000m Everest, K2, etc) Used on summit pushes and high camps where temperatures can drop below -30°C and your moving slow due to cues or altitude. Where I’ll be using this Apex 8000 from @montaneofficial will be on a Polar/ winter expedition as there is going to be long periods of standing still, navigating, or slowly pulling sleds and in these places temperatures often drop below -40°C, the area of Lapland is heading to this weekend clocked -38°c the other day 💀 In these environments, it’s obvious very important to prevent frostbite and hypothermia especially if I’m doing loads of filming etc which brings me onto what I’d class as the next use case… ‘Static cold exposure’ (belays, filming, research, Ice fishing) stuff like High-altitude photographers and filmmakers of Scientific fieldwork in extreme cold If you’re not moving much, you won’t make much body head and I’d often seen people wear them on documentary’s Saying all that Most people don’t need one. You don’t need a down suit for stuff like UK winter hiking or camping / Alpine 4,000ers For those, a good down jacket + proper layering is more than enough, Down suits are heavy costly and overkill in a lot of environments however in the right environment they will save your life, #hiking #mountains #mountaineering #polar #cold

Archive note — still relevant. I tested 12 jackets. None of them solved the whole problem. Not because they were bad — but because they were built in pieces. After years in gear design, you stop looking at products individually. You start seeing patterns — where things break, where they overpromise, where they almost work. If you’ve ever thought, “Why can’t one jacket just do everything?” That question is what started this. The rest came later — this was the starting point.

Did I miss any? Drop some brands in the comments that I should cover in part 4. 👀 #hiking #backpacking #outdoorapparel @peakperformance @66north @stellarequipment

I bought the @seatosummit Ether Light XR Pro (R 7.5) myself to test it in real alpine winter conditions. We slept end-February at 1,730m. -2°C during the night. Frozen ground. No additional insulation underneath. Just the mat. With 7.5R, insulation was never a question. I felt completely protected from the cold ground the whole night. What surprised me most is how light it is for that level of warmth (550g). Packs extremely small. This is definitely not casual summer gear. It’s premium equipment and a long-term investment. @seatosummiteu @seatosummituk

Dressing in layers is now a daily necessity, given the constant changes in temperature. In recent years, however, fashion has taken this concept to the extreme. In this episode of Dots On the Maps, we explain how layering originated from the experience of mountaineers, who are accustomed to adapting to climate changes at high altitudes. There is no rule about the number of layers: everyone chooses what works best for them. How many layers do you wear in the mountains?

At –60°C in Antarctica, the environment doesn’t adapt to you — you must adapt instantly or fail. The air strips heat from your body faster than you can produce it. Moisture in your lungs freezes. Exposed skin loses sensation in seconds. Even sound feels muted as your body prioritizes survival. This is why equipment, protocols, and timing matter more than strength or courage. In conditions like this, physics decides everything — and it doesn’t negotiate. Antarctica isn’t hostile. It’s simply indifferent. Love Technology? Staying close to the terrain offers protection from exposed altitude. The Gravity Jet Suit is able to quickly ascend mountains and gain altitude when required. 🚀🏔️

Real-world use isn’t about speed or spectacle. It’s about what holds up when the wind cuts, the cold settles in, and the climb keeps going. Expedition conditions don’t forgive design shortcuts. #LaettsSocks #RealWorldUse #Expedition #ColdExposure #SystemDriven #MerinoThermalSystem #HygroHeat

What Joona, the co-owner, wears on a ski expedition in extreme cold temperatures: 1. Base layer: merino wool next to skin. Gives warmth even when moist. 2. Mid layer: wool or a wool blend. Wool is warm and doesn’t smell. 3. Wool socks makes your feet nice and toasty! 4. Weatherproof hard shell to block wind and snow. Sometimes cotton/polyesther is great too! 5. The same layering principle applies to hands and feet 6. Proper winter boots with wool felt or in this case ski boots. 7. Thick, puffy down pants and a down jacket for insulation. This layer has to be thick! www.pihkaoutdoors.com #winterlayering #coldweathergear #adventuretravel #winterexpedition #outdoorclothing

Welcome to Iceland: one of Earth’s most extreme landscapes and a natural training ground for future space exploration. Think: icy volcanoes, steaming vents, sprawling lava fields… places like this are the closest you can get to another world without leaving the planet. NASA teams head here to rehearse for future explorers heading to the Moon, Mars, and the search for life beyond Earth. And good news… the field team featured in this video are back and ready to answer your questions about their journey! What do you want to ask them? Drop your Qs below. ⬇️
