Now one for tha West! The LA legend that is Ice-T pre-dates nearly everyone out here who came after that is now known as an LA hip-hop figure. For most of us it basically starts with him. This 1983-84 clip of him b-boying and rapping about dancers battling in the song "Reckless Rivalry Combat" (w/Chris 'The Glove' Taylor) is early archival evidence of how he connected all elements of the hip-hop culture out here with his early New Jersey roots transplanted to LA after losing both of his parents by middle school age. He even attended schools like Palms & Crenshaw HS in the early to mid 70's where he was in a crew that danced for a singing band. As an early listener of mostly rock music, which he'd later go on to incorporate into his own music, he got into hip-hop while in the Army after hearing Rapper's Delight by Sugar Hill Gang (like most of us did), then learning turntablism and rapping after cheaply acquiring equipment while stationed in Hawaii. A combo of his affinity for memorizing pimp tales from Iceberg Slim novels, a real life Hawaiian pimp who put him up on game, and the influence of rapper Schoolly D's gangsta rap style on single "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?", crafted his Ice-T nickname and persona. He eventually made his way back to LA after becoming a young Dad and began to build his Hip-Hop empire with he and Syndicate Crew. He's the first West Coast MC we saw on film in Breakin ('84) followed by the sequel Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo later that same year. He had early electro singles (circa '82) that did well on the underground, but his more hardcore rap appearances on the soundtrack and score of these 2 films would land him a deal to release his debut LP Rhyme Pays with hit "6 In Da Morning" by 1987. The rest is Lifetime Achievement Award history to date and still going strong as an accomplished actor and multi-genre platinum and gold selling music artist. Sidenote: the 1st time I ever went to @hextgo Hip-Hop Shop in Hollywood I saw Ice-T in there I couldn't believe it and he was cool af said what up to us.
