It’s your (and my) favorite part! The grand reveal! I fire my plowls and blates in pairs with their rims touching. This allows me to fit more pieces in each firing AND I love the look of the raw rims in contrast with the glazes. It just adds another layer of depth and dimensions to these pieces. Your Grandmother’s best dishes were probably not Wedgwood China. They were more likely to be affordable every day ironstone in patterns that were delightful to have stacked in a kitchen cabinet and lovingly used and washed by hand daily. And even with every day use, they lasted. Dishes like the popular Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles from 1930 graced beautiful tables in so many happy homes. Every day Ironstone dishes are a metaphor for sustainability and are a nostalgic connection to the experience of dining at table and the loving associations of gathering together from days gone by.
