Thomas Tallis (c. 1505–1585) lived through one of the most turbulent periods in English history—he was born just before Henry VIII’s 1534 break from Rome and went on to compose under four monarchs: Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. His music had to adapt to wildly shifting religious demands, from Catholic Latin motets to English Protestant psalms. In this video, I’m playing Veni Redemptor on a virginal—a popular domestic keyboard instrument in England from the early 1500s to the mid-1600s. Virginals were everywhere: in royal chambers, noble homes, and convents. I’ve tuned it in ¼ comma meantone, the tuning system most widely used across Europe from the 1400s to the late 1600s. It makes pure thirds shine and gives each key its own emotional character—bright, sour, glowing, or tense.
