Target fixation can affect even the safest, more experienced rider/driver. In this case, If I were more focused on the car, I might have went straight into it. Instead I was focusing on where I can find the space to avoid it. How to Avoid Target Fixation? The only solution to prevent target fixation is, don’t look where you don’t want to go. Few other things to keep in mind are: 1. When approaching a turn, look past the turn, and not right at the curve. 2. When you’re sharing the road with a vehicle, don’t look at the vehicle – look past the vehicle, almost as if you’re looking through it. 3. If an unexpected object enters your vision, such as a car pulling out, a dog running across the road, don’t look at it directly – use your peripheral vision to look beyond that. Target fixation is a real menace. But it doesn't mean you're a bad rider — it’s your brain doing exactly what it evolved to do. Your brain’s first instinct? Lock eyes on a threat, track it, don’t blink, don’t lose it. Just think of our caveman ancestors evaluating a danger in the bush. Problem is, that instinct doesn’t work so great on a motorcycle because wherever you look, your hands and bike naturally follow. If you’re staring at the thing you don’t want to hit… guess where you’re going. It gets worse — when you’re stressed, you get tunnel vision and lock in even harder on the danger. Everyone says “just look where you want to go.” But it's not that easy to just shut off your natural programming. It's even harder to do when your brain is in panic mode. Here’s what actually helps rewire that reflex: 1. Practice looking through turns and towards open space so your eyes lead the bike. 2. Always scan the road so your awareness stays wide and tunnel vision never gets a chance. 
 3. Get comfortable with hard braking — do it until it feels natural, and not scary. 4. When you feel that rush of panic — try to breathe. It’s a physical reset for your nervous system. Target Fixation! A lot of riders and drivers fall prey to this. What is target fixation? You see the obstacle… (or something else!) You stare at it… And then… You ride straight into it. Why? Because your brain does this: 👀 Eyes → 🧠 Focus → 🖐 Steering Where you look = where you go On a curve? Don’t look at the guardrail Look at the exit See a pothole? Don’t stare at it Look at the clear path REMEMBER: Don’t look at the danger Look at your escape Here you can see two girls falling victim to target fixation in a hilarious video. Whether it be your friend dragging his knee or a pothole, when riding especially in groups you have to ride your own ride. Ride your own lines. Pick your own apex in your head before you take turns! 2. Body Positioning. Think if you are half the weight of the bike that can influence a lot of how the bike is going to lean and turn. Even when turning in a parking lot small movements of the body towards the inside of the turn can make turning that much easier. At high speeds you and the bike should move independently of one another to allow for the most uniform weight distribution across your suspension. 3. Trail Braking. Trail braking is using the front/rear brake very lightly to apply load to the rear suspension and allow for more contact of the tire. if you use constant throttle and front/rear brake your ability to comfortably lean your bike over will increase tenfold. If you want to go deeper into riding I recommend a video called “Twist of the Wrist” it’s an old video from the early 2000s that will go in detail about more advanced concepts.
