Here’s some techniques which can make your fine line tattoos more confident and precise ⬇️ ‼️ Disclaimer: What works for me may not work for you. Experiment with advice that you see, and from these experiments, apply the lessons that you have personally learnt from your own experience. 1️⃣ Keep the ink flowing… Setting up the machine, ink and skin to ensure the ink is flowing smoothly is key. Using too much ointment (or Vaseline) can clog the cartridge and lead to inconsistent flow. Either use less ointment or clean your needles more regularly during the session. In addition to this, pay attention to your needle depth/the distance the needle is poking out of the cartridge. The further out, the less the ink will flow, but the more clarity you will have because ink doesn’t pour out everywhere. The further inside the needle sits in the cartridge, the greater the ink flow, leading to better saturation, but the messier the process will be. Experiment and find your balance. This will differ according to skin type, body placement and tattooing technique. 2️⃣ Keep the skin tight… An obvious one for any experienced tattoo artists, but it’s easy to neglect. Take your time to adjust your hand position so that you apply a broad stretch to the skin with the base of your palms, and then a local stretch with your fingers. This is especially important on thin and stretchy skin, like the ribs. 3️⃣ Keep focused… What I mean here is to focus on where the line is going. Before you put the needle into the skin, visualize and then follow the form of the line. Allow your hand to move as you do this, feel the curve and only when this movement feels smooth and fluid, lower the needle. Treat a line as a directional mark moving from A-B, rather than a static border.
