Have you noticed that our work cultures are obsessed with efficiency? Doing things as quickly as possible, to the exclusion of all else? This is because of Taylorism: the work ideology of Frederick Winslow Taylor. Taylor conducted time-studies at the end of 19th century in factories to understand how to make them as productive as possible. These involved breaking down each job into component parts, timing them with a stop-watch, and then rearranging them into the most efficient method of working. The goal of this approach was to lower costs and maximize productivity, irrespective of the physiological cost to the worker. His time studies resulted in a push for greater stopwatch monitored efficiency across the working landscape and his ideas shaped the curriculum of the first class of Harvard Business School in 1908. It has been Taylorism that has dominated work culture for most of the 20th century into 21st. Most management practice is still about increasing the efficiency and productivity of the workforce through KPIs and other performance targets. If you look around you, we are still all under this misguided illusion that efficiency is everything. The only change is that now we use computer algorithms instead of the stopwatch.
