600 trees planted around the historic Tchefuncte Lighthouse!! 🌱🥳 It’s been very cool to serve on the Super Bowl LIX sustainability committee these past few months. Some of us came out to help @pontchartrainconservancy and @nflgreen plant trees in this area susceptible to erosion and subsidence. I can’t wait to see how these trees do!

Diamondback water snake sunning itself along the Tchefuncte River. These snakes are frequently found basking on branches over water, and when approached, they will quickly drop into the water and swim away. If cornered, they will often hiss, and flatten the head and body to appear larger. They only typically resort to biting if physically harassed or handled. Louisiana’s Tchefuncte River Lighthouse is one of the oldest in the state. Built in 1837, it has been guiding vessels for almost 200 years. After being damaged during the Civil War, it was rebuilt in 1868 using the same bricks, and for over a century, it was operated manually until 1939. The land occupied by the lighthouse is eroding, and while the state has taken measures to protect this landmark, It is uncertain how the structure will look after the repairs. On a side note, while it is disheartening to witness these structures succumb to sea level rise, there is also a certain beauty in their aging and dying as a natural part of the cycle of life.
