Not broad guidance. Not “you’re doing too much or too little phonics.” 🧠 And here’s my take: teachers need actionable, detailed, grade-level-specific Tier 1 information. They need a doable, effective way to structure their time, materials, and energy inside Tier 1 so the block stays cohesive, clear, and coherent. 📘 And yes—I wrote a book about this. I created Backward Decoding to help my students build automaticity at the phoneme and word level! Instead of looking at the first letter and guessing, Backward Decoding forces students to pay close attention to the individual sounds in a word. What comes after the c or g? 👉 c + e, i, y → /s/ 👉 g + e, i, y → /j/ When students read all the way through and notice the vowel that follows, they can determine the sound with accuracy. No guessing.
