Another popular theory goes that it was about a women’s prison in the city which had a gate that bore a rising sun motif (allegedly a reference to the “ball and chain” lyric in the song). The song followed a traditional English ballad arrangement but became a phenomenon as an African-American folk song. It was first recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s and was followed by several artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, and Nina Simone, whose version was the first heard by the Animals. The band first performed the song while on tour in England with Chuck Berry. Seeing the response of the audience to the song, the band decided to record it between stops on the tour. In a 2010 interview, frontman Eric Burdon said: ‘House of the Rising Sun’ is a song that I was just fated to. It was made for me and I was made for it. It was a great song for the Chuck Berry tour because it was a way of reaching the audience without copying Chuck Berry. It was a great trick and it worked. Promotional Footage of The Animals performing “It’s My Life” for American Television in 1965 This song was written by Carl D’Errico (music) and Roger Atkins (lyrics) specifically for The Animals. Originally, the duo were working at the time for Screen Gems Music, which was part of the Brill Building music scene in NYC. Over the course of time the songwriters in that building have proven to be very lucrative for The Animals since they produced hits such as “We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place” (Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil) and “Don’t Bring Me Down” (Gerry Goffin and Carole King) originated from there. Frontman Eric Burdon said he “detested” this song and didn’t want to sing it, but it was producer Mickie Most who pushed for the band to record it. Perhaps in protest, Burdon changed some of the lyrics. Here’s a quote on how the song was made: “’It’s My Life” came about when Mickie Most, the producer of The Animals, said he was looking for songs for the group. The writers got busy writing and then handed in their acetates and there was a tall stack of them waiting for Mickie when he came in from London. Three of the songs in that stack were ‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place,’ ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ and ‘It’s My Life.’ The melody for ‘It’s My Life’ was the second one that I wrote for it. When I played the first one for Emil, he said that it didn’t have enough punch and it was the wrong groove, so I rewrote it. After the rewrite everyone knew it was a hit. Some of the writers would play their songs for one another to get feedback - we used these small rooms with pianos in them, so people would hop around and check out what was happening next door.” #Music #TheAnimals
