You can find out more about the young Brontës and their development as writers in the new exhibition Becoming the Brontës, at the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery in Leeds. Vintage Wuthering Heights… Book friends, literature lovers, Brontë fans the community in Thornton need our help. Most people know about the Brontë parsonage in Haworth but not everyone is aware that the sisters and Branwell were born in Thornton, just a few miles away from Haworth. The Brontë birthplace is at risk of being lost, once again, and the community are crowd funding with the hope of rescuing it from a private sale and restoring it as a community asset so that it cannot be lost or sold again. The community aim to open the upstairs as an Air B&B and the downstairs room (which includes the original fireplace that was there when the Brontë family lived there) will be a cafe and events space. I have added a link in my bio to the crowd funding page. It will also be on my stories. If you can donate, however small, every 1 pound will help. I have made a donation. This haunted village had an alarmingly low life expectancy In the first half of the 19th century the average life expectancy in Haworth was just 25. Way below the national average at the time, which was between 44 and 48. Experts believe the answer to the disparity may lie in the town’s water supply and its proximity to this massive graveyard. They believe Haworth's drinking water, which came from springs, was contaminated by rainwater that had drained through the town’s graveyard In fact, the graveyard was so overfilled due to the constant supply of fresh bodies, they were literally bursting out of the ground with their seepage adding to the pollution. The quaint Yorkshire village was famously home to the Bronte sisters who, along with their less famous siblings, all died before the age of 40 - this was unusual for a middle class family, even in the 19th century. But when you consider that their house overlooked the massive seeping cemetery, it’s no surprise that their relatively comfortable lifestyle couldn’t stave off the infections from all that graveyard water. It’s also no surprise that the village is teaming with ghosts. Emily Bronte’s spirit has reportedly been spotted wandering the moors (how’s that for death imitating art?) Tourists have also reported seeing a figure in old fashioned clothes wandering through the graveyard at night. While heavy sighs, groans and muttering can apparently be heard throughout the cemetery.
