Let’s talk about the default parent! There will obviously be one parent who’s going to be the default and with that comes a sense of pressure, physical exhaustion and of course some form of resentment that often is left unaddressed until that default parent comes to breaking point. To confirm, the default parent is one who just does more with the baby, the main carer, the one who randomly worries if their child’s clothes and shoes still fit okay, they one who’s thinking of potty training months in advance, the one who will know their child’s percentiles but also lucky to know their little one will run to them when needed which is massive reward within it self. Basically, if you can go about your daily life without having to worry about childcare then you are not that default parent. When the mother talks ill of the dad, the child pays the price. It doesn’t always sound obvious. Sometimes it’s small, cutting remarks like: “Your dad never cared enough.” “If he really loved you, he’d be here.” “I don’t know why you even bother with him.” Other times, it’s guilt trips, sighs, or cold silence when the child mentions their father. Little by little, the child learns: Loving Dad makes Mom unhappy. This is called parental alienation—and it’s a form of emotional abuse. The mother isn’t just attacking the father; she’s tearing apart the child’s sense of safety, identity, and belonging. A child should never feel like they have to “choose” between parents. A child should never carry the burden of adult conflict. And a child should never be manipulated into rejecting love that rightfully belongs to them. Talking badly about the other parent doesn’t just hurt the dad—it scars the child. Healthy co-parenting lifts the child up. Toxic co-parenting uses them as a weapon.
