But live, especially at the Capital Centre in Landover during the Hotel California tour, the song felt even heavier. Don Henley does not sing it like a fantasy about the future. He sings it like somebody realizing time is running out. His voice starts off smooth and controlled, but the more the song builds, the more frustration starts leaking through. By the chorus, it sounds less like confidence and more like somebody desperately trying to convince themselves that “one of these nights” will finally be the night everything changes. That was exactly the idea behind the song. In a 1975 interview with Phonograph Record, Glenn Frey explained: “It’s like, puttin’ things off… Everybody I’m sure has said, ‘One of these nights I’m gonna…’ Gonna drive back to that restaurant an’ take that waitress in my arms, whatever. Find that girl, make that money, buy that house. Move to that country. Any of that stuff. Everyone’s got his ultimate dream, savin’ it for ‘someday.’ And ‘someday’ is up to you.” That quote gives the song an entirely different meaning. It is not really about one specific woman or one specific night. It is about all the things people keep postponing until life suddenly feels shorter than they expected.
