The Eames Houses is a multi-faceted architectural initiative at the Triennale di Milano during Milan Design Week 2026, presented by the Eames Office and centered on an exhibition and the debut of the Eames Pavilion System. Developed with Kettal, the Pavilion System translates Charles and Ray Eames’ residential work of the 1940s and 1950s into a fully engineered construction system, extending their approach to prefabrication as an adaptable framework for contemporary living. The Eames Houses draws on extensive archival research, presenting previously unseen materials from the Eames Office Archive. On view April 21–May 10, 2026, it is accompanied by a Phaidon publication—the first sourcebook dedicated to their residential architecture. Charles and Ray Eames, Designers and Builders The Eames House, 1949 Case Study House #8 Pacific Palisades The Eames House, also known as Case Study House No. 8, is an iconic example of mid-20th-century modern architecture. Situated at 203 North Chautauqua Boulevard in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, it was designed and built by husband-and-wife design visionaries Charles and Ray Eames as their personal residence and workspace. This project was part of the Case Study House program initiated by Arts & Architecture magazine, which aimed to inspire innovative yet affordable home designs tailored to Southern California living. The Eameses moved into the house on Christmas Eve in 1949 and lived there for the rest of their lives—Charles passing in 1978 and Ray in 1988. Following their deaths, Charles’s daughter, Lucia Eames, inherited the property and established the Eames Foundation in 2004 to preserve its legacy. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2006, the house operates as a historic house museum under the foundation’s care. Looking forward to seeing this ambitious project break ground next year. “The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity is ecstatic and humbled to share our plans for a world-class museum that will bring innovative design programming and immersive art experiences to the public. The museum will be housed in the former Birkenstock campus in Novato, California. This new cultural destination will feature a wide range of offerings, including art and design exhibitions, makerspaces and workshops, educational programming, accessible public open space, culinary and retail experiences, and a rotating display of the Eames Collection archives and other major collections. The campus was originally designed in the 1960s for the publishing company McGraw-Hill by John Savage Bolles, a celebrated modernist architect with deep roots in the Bay Area. The Birkenstock footwear company became the primary tenant at the site from 1994 to 2019, and the Novato landmark has been vacant since 2020. Although the campus has been inaccessible to the public for most of its existence, the warehouse structure⁠—with its distinctive saw-tooth roofline⁠—is a beloved local icon. It is a striking and enduring example of mid-century modern design.
