In the Guide for the Perplexed the Rambam writes about how Hashem exists without a corporal being (opposite of the Greek and Christian philosophy at the time), and that to be made “B tzelem Elokim” is to exist in our thoughts without making actions with our own corporal body. ••• To be made in the likeness of Gd is to be made with the ability to perceive things that are not even in existence. So let’s use our imagination to see the peace and healing that will come through this time, that is on it’s way. Let’s imagine a world 🌎 where there is no antisemitism- not even under the surface waiting to bubble up like it has the last 8 weeks. I invite you to imagine what you truly want for yourself. ••• What kind of life do you want? What kind of career, relationships, and future do you truly desire? We are never deserving, but we are always receiving. Moses #Maimonides (1135-1204) was born to a distinguished Jewish family in Córdoba, Moses Maimonides fled from the city’s ruling Islamic sect, called the Almohads, to Morocco and then Palestine to avoid persecution in 1159. He eventually settled in Egypt, where he became the court physician to Sultan Saladin and worked on his theological and philosophical masterwork, Guide for the Perplexed. Speaker: Ustadh Adnan Rashid is a historian from London. He specialises in Islamic history. Adnan Rashid has also attained a number of ijazas in hadith sciences from reputable hadith authorities. "My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation." (Deuteronomy 26:5) In the 12th century, Moses Maimonides, in his book The Guide of the Perplexed, says this ritual is the basis for generosity and humility. Maimonides says, "Offering the first fruits of the harvest is a way to accustom people to be generous and a means of limiting the human appetite for more and more and more. Bringing the first fruits and reciting the prayer promotes humility." I know many of us would like to see the end of 2020; Rosh Hashanah gives us an earlier opportunity to celebrate a new year. I don't know what you're hoping for this new year, but I'm praying that we'll all know the spirit of generosity. And we will all be reminded to be more humble and to have a sense of empathy for those who are suffering around us, and if you don't notice people are suffering around us, it's because you have your eyes shut and our ears covered.
