The Shining’s Ending: What Did It Mean? As with many Kubrick movies, they leave you questioning not only the whole movie, but the final moments too. Kubrick was a director focused on small, subtle details. For example, his use of foreshadowing when Jack says earlier on “it’s as if I’d been here before,” perhaps alludes to the idea that Jack was reincarnated and was always destined to come back to The Overlook Hotel. The idea of reincarnation, and why I’m mentioning it, comes from the visual cues and mentions to the Native Americans (who also believed in reincarnation): “[the hotel] is supposed to be located on an Indian burial ground,” explains the hotel manager. Are the supernatural evils the Native Americans? Just as they are trapped underneath the hotel, whoever enters may be trapped for eternity too (just like Jack in the photo). But if Jack was reincarnated, it makes you question the meaning of free will. Was his character ever really free; or was he always destined to come back to The Overlook Hotel? The idea of revenge — taking the lives of the innocent (Wendy & Danny) — reflects how the Native Americans were treated long before The Overlook Hotel was built. It’s a twisted story about the dark past, foggy present and unsettling future. And there’s just way too much to unravel in a single post… so let me know what your interpretation of the ending was!
