When a client starts crying, here’s what’s actually happening inside a therapist’s mind: Not panic. Not discomfort. Not “oh no, I need to fix this.” It’s more like a quiet internal shift. First thought This matters. Tears mean something real just surfaced. Something honest. Something the nervous system finally felt safe enough to release. Then Stay steady. My job isn’t to rush you through it or shut it down. It’s to be regulated enough that you don’t feel alone inside it. There’s also an internal scan Are you dissociating or staying present Is this grief, relief, anger, or long held exhaustion Do I let the silence breathe or gently anchor you. At the same time I’m holding the frame. Watching your breathing. Tracking your body language. Making sure the moment doesn’t tip into overwhelm. And quietly I’m honored. Because tears usually show up when someone has stopped performing and started telling the truth. What I’m not thinking You’re too much This is awkward You need to stop Crying in therapy isn’t a breakdown. It’s often the first sign that healing is actually happening. Here 👇 OMG this is every group therapist’s worst nightmare! But first, comment “SHEET” to get my cheat sheet of group therapy clinical interventions emailed right to your inbox! Imagine this: You’re sitting in your first group therapy session as the group therapist, and nobody is talking! Here’s how I handle this as a group therapist who’s been running groups in private practice since 2019: ➡️ First, during the intake appointment, tell your future group member about how the group is run and what your expectations are of them while they are in the group. ➡️ Next, during the first session, make sure the structure and expectations for the sessions are discussed and everyone is in agreement and mutual understanding about what they’re doing there. ➡️ And finally, if the group is just *not talking*, (which after setting the stage above I’d be pretty surprised about), provide them with a specific prompt to get them started. ✅ And once they’re speaking, let your group do the work! Don’t jump in after each person says something. Allow the group to unfold. Allow for awkward silences and pauses. See what comes up. Don’t try to jump in too quickly because if you do, you run the risk of the group becoming reliant on you instead of relying on one another. Like what you’re reading? Most people say: “Oof, I don’t want to hear that. That’s too much for me.” Therapy says: Can you tell me more about that? Most people say: “It’s not that big of a deal.” Therapy says: Tell me more about what that felt like for you. Most people say: “Just let it go.” Therapy says: Your body is holding onto something for a reason. Most people say: “They’re just dramatic.” Therapy says: Their nervous system is overwhelmed. Most people say: “They should know better by now.” Therapy says: People react from what their nervous system knows, not what they logically understand. Most people say: “They need consequences.” Therapy says: Safety changes behavior more than consequences ever will. Most people say: “They’re too emotional.” Therapy says: Logic shuts down when the body feels threatened. #adhdlife #neurodivergent #mentalhealthawareness #therapistofinstagram #emotionalregulation #adhdawareness #angermanagement

Some subtle things your therapist is probably picking up on 👇🏼 1️⃣ YOUR BODY LANGUAGE Sometimes your body says more than your words. Crossing your arms, fidgeting, or avoiding eye contact, we notice the subtle cues that tell us how comfortable or uncomfortable you’re feeling-even if you don’t realize it yourself 👀 . 2️⃣ YOUR SELF-TALK Your therapist picks up on the way you talk about yourself-whether it’s full of self-compassion or harsh criticism. Those little phrases like “I’m so stupid” or “I should’ve known better” don’t go unnoticed. We are tracking it all, to gently bring them to your awareness in the appropriate timing 🗣️ 3️⃣YOUR PROGRESS Even on the days when you feel stuck, your therapist notices the small shifts-like being more open, setting a boundary, or challenging an old belief. We remember where you were so we can reflect back to you how you are growing and changing all the time. Progress isn’t always big or loud; it often shows up in the tiny shifts 🌱. . . . #counselor #counselors #counseling #counselorsofinstagram #counselorlife #therapist #therapy #therapists #therapistsofinstagram #therapistlife #psychotherapy #psychotherapist #psychotherapists #psychotherapistsofinstagram #therapistmemes #therapymemes #therapylife #socialwork #socialworker #socialworkers #socialworkerlife

As I post this reel, a warm wave of emotion comes over me. Have I been challenged? Hell yes. Any good therapist should be. Would I have it any other way? Absolutely not. I think of my clients often—their wins, their struggles, their wisdom, their stories. The lessons they teach me. The hurdles we work to overcome together. I am deeply honored to hold these stories with such care, and grateful every day for the privilege of a lifetime—this work, this profession. No matter your profession, what are you grateful for today? #therapist #therapy #psychotherapist #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters

The first therapy session can feel really scary. You’re sitting with someone you just met and your brain is trying to decide if it’s safe to be honest… so you might go blank, talk too much, laugh, apologize, or want to cancel. Nothing about that is weird. Your nervous system is just protecting you. But please know that the first session is just about getting to know each other and your comfort is a priority. There’s no pressure to talk about anything in specific. And you can also get a chance to ask any questions you’re curious about. #therapytips #traumatherapy

Different therapy modalities resonate with different types of people—and that’s a good thing. Some thrive with the structured, thought-focused approach of CBT. Others connect more deeply through the emotion-centered lens of EFT. And for those navigating life’s complexity, ACT offers a values-based path forward. There’s no one-size-fits-all in healing—just the right fit for you. 🎥 @therapy_to_the_point
