Thread Lathing? 🤔 I guess it’s like thread milling, but in a lathe 🤪 Thanks for that @thepragmaticmachinist I’m a machinist and I get bored easy. So I do all kinds of silly things just because I can. This is one such thing. The replacement fork for the 1974 Raleigh Grand Prix bike I’m modding had a steerer tube that was too long. @billings_cycle_works cut it down to the right length, but it still needed standard 1”-24 TPI headset threads on the end. “Want me to just chase it with a die?” He asked. “Nah,” I replied, “I’ve got a fun idea.” I wanted to single point the threads. But the fork is an awkward and unwieldy shape, and I couldn’t hold it in the lathe spindle to cut the threads with a tool in the toolpost. So instead I did the opposite: I mounted the fork in the toolpost and held the tool in an offset boring head in the lathe spindle. The offset boring head allowed me to adjust the depth of cut and keep the part coaxial with the spindle. I didn’t know how this would work at first. And truth be told when I first set it up I realized after a couple cuts that I was inadvertently cutting left handed threads 🤡 But I was able to recoup because I had removed very little material.
