💥The Stiff Thumb: Exercise Ideas💥 ▪️Some of my favorite exercises to use when addressing a stiff thumb following an injury! 1️⃣ Sponge cube “flicks”: Cut up sponges held in the hand and “flicked” one at a time using the thumb. Using a target such as a bucket can make it more engaging. 2️⃣ “Bottle opener” putty twists: Twisting this specialized tool against putty resistance can simulate the technique required for opening a bottle. 3️⃣ Thumb towel gather: Bend thumb in fully to bring the towel closer to the hand, then extend it completely to push the towel away. 4️⃣ “Bottle opener” Flexbar twists: This time using a Flexbar, simulate the technique used for opening a bottle against resistance 5️⃣ The numbers ball: This is a lacrosse ball with numbers 1-9 written on the ball. #clinicalhighlight: Thumb arthritis (especially at the CMC) can cause a lot of pain with pinching and gripping at the base of the thumb. 👉 One way to help treat this and alleviate some pain is by using a taping technique to give some support by strategically wrapping around the painful joint. ✨ I start with a long strip and cut about a 2/3 of the way through the tape. ✨ First anchor the base of the tape at the base of the thumb. With a slight stretch over the CMC joint, the top strip is then wrapped around the base of the thumb and secured at the original tape starting point. The second strip slightly overlaps it, wrapping around the base of the thumb and is secured in the same manner. ✨ In more mild cases or flare ups this can help manage pain. More severe cases may require immobilization more than taping.
