Yesterday I found these ticks on a dog during grooming… and yes — this dog is on flea & tick prevention. Let that sink in. Prevention is SO important, but it is not 100% foolproof. Ticks can still hitch a ride, crawl through the coat, and attach before the product has time to do its job. And here’s the part a lot of people don’t realize… Ticks aren’t just a “summer problem.” They are active year-round, especially anytime temperatures are above freezing. That means your pet is at risk in your own yard, on walks, and even on those random warm winter days. And it doesn’t stop with your pet — they can bring ticks right into your home. ➡️ Check your pets thoroughly ➡️ Check yourself after being outside ➡️ Pay attention to areas like ears, neck, armpits, between toes, and under collars Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other serious illnesses for both pets and people — and early detection matters. When I was in second grade… back in the good old 90’s, I got sick with Lymes disease… for a month i missed school, was horrifically sick, went through testing and they kept telling my mother it wasn’t Lyme… I had really high fevers, vomiting, and bulls eyes that started at the bite site and eventually had them pop up all over my body… But I had tested negative for Lyme so they said “no! Must be mono!” It wasn’t until my mom went into the doctors office every day for a week, sitting in the waiting room with me sick demanding medication to treat for Lyme… that I eventually was given a prescription. After 24 hours of taking the first doses I looked at my mom and said “thank you for getting me medicine” 🥺 It was terrible. It wasn’t fun. So when we moved to the woods three years ago… and we started pulling ticks off us daily I kinda freaked out… But I’m standing here today and declaring I’m so tired of living in fear! This app will have you terrified of a new thing every hour if you let it! After that first Summer I realized I can’t stress about the ticks. We need to prepare for them. Natural bug spray when going in the high grasses. And a thorough tick check after coming in from outside and every night before bed… almost always we can catch them before they attach and then we just drop them in a cup of water and soap to kill them… dumping the cup later at night… If a tick does attach that I’m worried about I can put it in a ziplock bag and toss it in the freezer if we need to test it later… But mostly it’s just prevention… doing tick checks multiple times a day… and having peace with that. The other morning I took my coffee outside to bathe in the sunshine while my babies played with chalk on the porch. I came in and felt a tickle on my leg and saw this guy… into the soapy water he went. And I moved on with my day. Yes Lyme stinks. I’ve had it. It was terrible. But we are all going to stress ourselves out into an early grave. We need the sunshine and fresh out. Take a hike. Touch grass..
