Inventor of the World Wide Web imagines a different digital future 🌐 'Imagine individuals had a sense of digital sovereignty?', says Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web at CERN in the late 1980s. Fast forward a few decades and the web has over 5.5 billion users. It has revolutionised everything from how we communicate to how we shop. Modern life is unimaginable without it. But it’s not without its problems, too. Tap the link in bio to watch our full conversation with Tim Berners-Lee #AI #internet #worldwideweb #attentioneconomy #digitalage

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the web, wants to give you control of your data. But Big Tech isn’t ready to let go, says Parmy Olson. Tap the link in our bio to read why.

Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, chose not to patent or monetise his creation, even though he could have become one of the richest people in history. Instead of owning or controlling the internet, he made its core technologies free for everyone to use, ensuring open access, innovation, and global connectivity. His decision allowed the web to grow into a public good that powers modern communication, education, business, and culture, shaping the digital world without a single owner. Before he connected the world with the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee was an eight-year-old boy with a problem—his electric train set kept breaking down. But instead of giving up, young Tim did something extraordinary: he decided to build his own computer from spare parts just to fix it. Tim’s parents, both brilliant mathematicians, had met while working on the world’s first commercial computer, the Ferranti Mark 1. They had always encouraged his curiosity, often discussing logic and programming at the dinner table. But money was tight, and they couldn’t afford to buy him a new train set or fancy electronics. Instead, they sacrificed their weekends to take Tim to junkyards, where he rummaged through discarded circuit boards and old gadgets, collecting anything with wires and switches. One evening, after weeks of tinkering in his room, Tim proudly showed his parents a makeshift system of relays and circuits. With the flip of a switch, the train whizzed around the track without a hitch, powered not by a store-bought controller, but by the mind of a boy who would one day engineer the world’s greatest information revolution. His mother, watching in awe, leaned down and whispered, "You’ve built something out of nothing, Tim. That’s how the best ideas start." Decades later, when he invented the web, Berners-Lee followed the same principle: connecting pieces, solving problems, and bringing order to chaos. The little boy who refused to let a broken train stop him had grown up to create a system that kept the whole world moving forward. 🚂💻🌍

It’s World Wide Web Day!! This day is celebrated on August 1 in honor of the creator of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee. Here’s Tim Berners-Lee accepting the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th Annual Webby Awards with his 5-Word Speech: “Free. Open. Keep one web.”

Tim Berners-Lee | The man who built the web and refused to own it Tim Berners-Lee [1955] transformed the internet from a technical network into a universal information system. Born in London, he studied physics at University of Oxford before working as a software engineer. In the late 1980s at CERN, scientists struggled to share information across different computer systems. Berners-Lee proposed a solution: a system of linked documents accessible through a common protocol. In 1989, he created the foundations of the World Wide Web, including HTML for structuring pages, HTTP for communication, and the first web browser. In 1991, the first website went live, demonstrating how information could be shared globally through hyperlinks. At a time when such technology could have been patented and controlled, Berners-Lee made a critical decision. He released the web as an open standard, allowing anyone to build on it without restrictions. This decision enabled rapid adoption and exponential growth. Within a few years, the web expanded from a niche research tool to a global platform for communication, business, and knowledge sharing. Today, it underpins everything from education to commerce. Berners-Lee didn’t just create a technology. He made a system that belonged to everyone, and that’s why it scaled to the entire world. #thealmostgenius #worldwideweb #timbernerslee
