How to use time tracking to maximize profitability 👇 For most designers, project rates are the way 👏 to 👏 go 👏 BUT only if you know how long a project takes you. ($500 for five hours of work is WAYYY different than $500 for 50 hours of work 🙃) Don't know how long a project takes you? The solution is: TIME TRACKING! ⏰ Here's how you can track your time to determine your project rate and maximize your profitability.... 1️⃣ GET A TIME TRACKING APP! I personally use Toggl, it’s a free website, and it allows you to track time and categorize it into projects, so I have a folder called “client projects” and then within it, I can make a task that is that client’s name. 2️⃣ LOG THE TIME YOU SPEND ON A PROJECT! Every time you work on a project, hit that start button on your time tracker, and let it work some magic. With an app like Toggl, you can get super specific with describing tasks, and go back later to see exactly how long each element of a project took you! 3️⃣ CALCULATE YOUR HOURLY RATE! Once you've got that final number of hours worked on the project, take your project rate, subtract your processing fees and other expenses, and divide that final number by the number of hours worked. Here's an example... PROJECT RATE ($5000) - EXPENSES & FEES ($500) = $4500 ADJUSTED PROJECT RATE ($4500) / HOURS WORKED (75) = $60/HOUR 4️⃣ REVIEW YOUR RATE AND ADJUST ACCORDINGLY! Hooray, you know your hourly rate! Now that you know how long that type of project takes you, take a good look at your rate and evaluate if it needs to go up or down. If you'd like to get even more specific, you could even go into the logistics of certain tasks within your project (if you tracked that), and see which tasks are taking you too long so you can shorten them and increase profitability in the future. So that's it! That's my hack on using time tracking to maximize profitability. Pretty awesome, right? 😍 Let's hear it designers - are you tracking your time?
